Our blogging motorhome friends Henrik and Eva are now on their way on their journey down through Europe. Join us and read about their wonderful journey:
There's always a certain amount of chaos when you're going on a long journey but this time it was a bit messier than usual. We both have pretty blue personalities which often results in a lot of planning to anticipate all possible and unthinkable scenarios.
However, you can never prepare for everything, which we unfortunately experienced even before we left. When the worst possible thing happens, it is a reminder that life can be short. You should make the most of the time you have and not put off your dreams until tomorrow.
We considered cancelling but finally decided that it was better to go a week later than not to go at all. That's one of the biggest advantages of travelling by motorhome, it's no problem to change your plans as you are not dependent on flights, hotels and lots of other bookings.
No sooner said than done, we hauled in all the gear and set off at top speed for France. Now, Rendahl's top speed may not be that fast, but the plan was to do the 150 miles in three days.
It happened to be midsummer's eve when we went and you have to celebrate with herring lunch along the road and when we arrived, grilled pluma with mustard ice cream. The first overnight stay was at Villa Maria Garden in Mörarp where you get your very own pitch and you can also enjoy their beautiful garden.
When we went to bed, we discovered the next problem. Our Truma had shut down and all it could produce was an annoying error message, E653H.
Not optimal but we were a bit too tired to think more about it. Once again we were faced with the question of whether to turn back but realised that if we could not solve it ourselves, there must reasonably be workshops in France too.
We stopped briefly in Malmö to get the only version of Torx we didn't have with us, which of course was needed to access Truman. On the way out, Mr Rendahl commented: "Just to be able to go to a real toilet before going far away is worth ten times the cost of the tool." However, it turned out that higher powers had heard our wish as there was a parking ticket on the window that was almost exactly ten times as much.
The journey continued over the Öresund Bridge, past Kolding and suddenly we were in Germany. Here the Autobahn took over so the pace increased. After Hamburg it was time for dinner so we checked in at Camping Imbrock, a large campsite but with the bonus that "guests" get their own forest glade that is a bit secluded from those who rent a seasonal site. A great campsite that really manages to create a secluded nature experience despite its size.
Most of the next day was spent on the Autobahn which may sound strange as it was only 53 miles to the French border. However, at this time of the year there are traffic jams everywhere, partly due to traffic but also due to roadworks and accidents.
We may not have felt we had the perfect start to our holiday but any negative feelings disappeared like magic when we arrived in the stunning little village of St Martin. Weingut Schreieck has a caravan park at the back of their site which has both fresh facilities and a very beautiful location. In the facilities category there is a wine fridge stocked with their own wine which is a nice touch. The village is also really cosy with lots of nice restaurants and shops. For a moment we had the whim to stay there but we finally managed to tear ourselves away and move on to the land of the bon vivants.
Now the holidays can begin in earnest! You're coming with us on our motorhome adventure, right?
