Our customers Henrik & Eva Rendahl continue their motorhome journey through the French villages, discovering several nice vineyards along the way! 🍷😍

"Hello all bon vivants!

When Driving around all the cosy fairytale villages in Alsace, it's easy to think that the houses are filled with Santa's elves who are in the middle of making Christmas presents. But when you enter, you realise that they are filled with winemakers who have been doing pretty much the same thing since the Middle Ages. But they're far from being the first, as the Romans were already growing wine here 50 years ago. BC.

We had a vivid example of this when we booked a pitch with a winemaker in Wettolsheim. During the tasting, we learnt that he was the thirteenth generation to produce wine on the farm. He told us a very moving story of how the family has been affected by the area changing nationality so many times.

The tasting itself was incredible, not only for his interesting stories, but also because we got to taste no less than fifteen of his excellent wines. So keep the name Domaine Jean-Louis Schoepfer in mind if you are travelling through Wettolsheim.

When it comes to tastings, there's a wide range so you can afford to be a little choosy.

The easiest option is to just pop into one of the showrooms run by the producers. Here you can try as many wines as you want from a list, but then on your own without a guide. Keep in mind, however, that if you go to the lesser-known villages or to a producer who is a little outside the city centre, you often have to book in advance or wait until the winemaker comes home from the field.

The next option is to book a more organised tasting. Most major producers offer this but be sure to book in advance as it can sometimes be booked several weeks ahead. They often have employed sommeliers, luxurious premises and sometimes even include a tour of their winery and/or production. This may not be a favourite with us but it is still fun to do one or two such tastings in each region as they are informative and professional but at the same time not so personal.

However, I have to say that on this particular trip we managed to get a very special tasting even in this category. When we arrived at Marcel Deiss, it was closed for lunch. Before us in the queue there was a couple with whom we chatted a bit before going in. When the place opened, the staff assumed that we had come together and since they were apparently wine importers from South America, we could ride a little free ride on them. There were very nice wines served at that tasting and many of them were in a class that we wine lovers can only dream of. 😍

The third option is to seek out smaller, independent producers. They put their heart and soul into the wine they produce and it's hard not to get swept up in their passionate stories. We've already mentioned Schoepfer, which is one of them, but you can also look out for the Vignerons indépendants label. You can also go to one of the many wine bars that specialise in smaller, independent winemakers.

If you are interested in wine, we can recommend going to Andlau and Bergheim, both of which are a bit "off the beaten path" but which at the same time house some of Alsace's absolute best winemakers. Here you will find Rémy Gresser, Marc Kreydenweiss, Domaine Wach, Marcel Deiss, Gustave Lorentz, Sylvie Spielmann, etc. All these producers make Grand Cru and Andlau has no less than three of the 51 areas approved to do so in Alsace.

If you want a more mixed experience, you can go to towns like Ribouville or Riquewihr. They are a bit more touristy but have lots of showrooms and also much more to see.

If you want a bit of everything, you can also go to Colmar, which is the whole of Alsace compressed into one city. But we will tell you more about that particular city in the next post.

What is the best wine experience? What is your favourite wine? 🍷🍇What would you like to recommend? Please write it in the comments. There you will also find a link to our blog where you can read more about both new and old experiences."

Greetings Eva & Henrik 🙂
