Vinje Camping, Geiranger

Camping with a view.

When you've just breathed a sigh of relief at not being crushed by a tourist bus on the narrow serpentine road down to Geiranger, you might not be so keen to go any further. A tip from us is to grit your teeth and drive on anyway. Drive one and a half kilometres past Geiranger and you will come to Vinje Camping with views of the entire Geirangerfjord.

As it's a campsite rather than just a pitch, it has all the facilities you need, including a toilet, shower, kitchen and laundry. They also have a reception with a shop which sells fresh bread in the morning. It was clean and fresh and the staff were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, only the cottages are bookable, on the campsites it is first come first served.

There is also a campsite down in the village but it's pretty boring and apart from the fabulous views it's mostly a car park for motorhomes. At Vinje you get both a cosy place and beautiful views. It will be a short walk down to Geiranger, but it is a nice walk along a waterfall that stretches all the way down to the fjord. The waterfall also runs through the campsite, so if you want, you can stay just a few metres from the rushing water. By the way, the waterfall can be heard wherever you stand on Vinje, nothing for those who easily get the urge to pee. 🙂
